SLM is located in Maupin, Oregon ‘a small little drinkin town with a fishin problem’ according to the bumper sticker. The project consists of the renovation and an ‘addition’ to an existing single-family residence located along the Deschutes River. Through the acquisition of the adjacent parcel the project revitalized an underwhelming builder home and included the development of a second home on the adjacent property, we combined the properties into a single parcel while maintaining the setbacks of the original parcels. A ‘bridge’ connects the two homes, with a coffee bar and seating space located within the bridge to recover and recharge. In the event that the two parcels need to be re-established, the design and construction of the bridge can be removed with little alteration to either primary structure. Firewise construction, landscaping and exterior materials are thoughtfully designed throughout as the area is prone to summertime fires that arise without warning and spread quickly in the High Desert.
