LS is a proposed substantial renovation and addition to an existing waterfront home located on Mercer Island, Washington. The original 1952 construction is dark and uncomfortable due to an unwieldly mix of staircases and level changes.
The introduction of a single glazed vertical circulation will draw daylight into lowest level and provide an engaging experience when travelling up or down through the home.
The existing foundation will be preserved to minimize disturbance to the site and the addition is designed to step down with the slope of the site. The original residence will be otherwise completely transformed to reflect the active lifestyle of the family and capture the phenomenal views over Lake Washington.
LS is the first permitted residence using cross laminated timber (CLT) construction on Mercer Island. The exposed wood CLT ceilings, concrete floors, and steel columns & beams will provide a simple yet refined material palette for the home.
